ORBEA OPTIMA – IT’S ALL ABOUT BALANCE.
The new Orbea Optima E50 is light, comfortable and easy to ride. It’s the bike for those who aren’t serious bike riders. And would rather take their time, absorbing the scenery rather than get from point A to B in the fastest time.
Orbea has designed the Optima for the recreational rider who wants to get back into riding on a comfortable and stable e-bike, or wants an e-bike they can commute on.
The Optima’s ergonomics are designed for stability and comfort, rather than sportiness and racing. It has a very relaxed and upright riding position.
Handlebars have a nice back-sweep to encourage a straighter back position, and the head stem is raised high to stop riders from leaning down too much, especially if your flexibility isn’t great.
The Optima is designed around hydroformed aluminium tubing. This is a fancy way of saying the frame has been made as light as possible by removing excess material where it’s not required and reinforcing high-stress areas. By doing this the Optima rides light and makes it easy to maneuver.
A low step-through frame also makes getting on and off the Optima a breeze.
There’s often no elegant way to get on and off a bike, so for Optima riders this should be a blessing.
Mahle is the drive unit of choice for the Optima.
Why?
Because their X35 rear hub drive unit is one of the lightest in the world. But it also several other advantages:
A patent pending pedal sensor allows Orbea to use a conventional or standard bottom bracket (where the pedals and cranks arms are). Mid-drive units have friction above the legal limit of 25km/h.
The battery isn’t dumb. It has everything built into it; cabling, engine control and Battery Management System. Its slim profile also makes the Optima look less “electric” and more “natural”.
40Nm of torque is sufficient for inner city riding, commuting and bike paths. And the motor delivers this torque between 15km/h and 25km/h, the ideal range.
The Optima has 3 power modes and offers a walk mode too.
Equipment on the Optima E50 includes Shimano gears and Shimano disc brakes. To keep the drive system simple, there’s 1 gear at the front, paired to 8 gears at the gears. The gears also have a good range, allowing riders to use the Optima on flat, gently undulating and even steeper inclines.
50mm wide Kenda tyres add another layer of comfort to the ride. So for riders who often experience smooth dirt, gravel and exposed aggregate on their bike ride, the Optima tyres will help smooth out these bumpy surfaces.
Safety is also at the front of mind. Integrated front and rear lights that offer visibility in low light and daytime conditions.
