e-Bikes perfect for a city like Melbourne!

Melbourne electric travel is slowly increasing in and around the city! From cars to scooters and e-bikes. For electric bikes there are some legal requirements you should be aware of. E-bikes have a limit of 250 watts output and a maximum speed of 25 km/h. If the power exceeds 250w or it can travel at more than 25 kmh with motor assistance then it is not legal and could be classed as an unregistered motorcycle. “An EPAC (electrically power-assisted cycle) is a safe alternative mode of transport to a manual bicycle or passenger car. An EPAC has power assistance that allows a rider to travel further and with less effort but it must operate within the rules.” – vicroads.vic.gov.au

Electric Bikes (e-bikes) and (e) scooters

With the recent addition of the branded e-scooters you can zip around (up to 20Kmh ) on bike lanes, bike paths, shared paths and roads. This is great news for commuters! Private e-scooters are now legal to ride in and around the city for riders aged 16+ but they can only travel at a max speed of 20Km/h or have a motor with a maximum output of 200w or less (source: vicroads.vic.gov.au ).

We love seeing an electric bike in Melbourne!

Cycling around the city on your e-bike, whether it’s just for fun, or you’re doing your shopping, or picking the kids up with your cargo ebike is a great way to get around. Many of our staff members here at Cargocycles commute from various parts of the city. Paul even rode in from Point Cook using the Bay Trail alongside the beach in Altona just a few weeks ago – read more about his journey here.

Commuting around on your e-bike is easier than you think! It doesn’t have to be just during the summer either, get some waterproofs and ride year-round. Even though it is an electric bike you still get improvements to your cardiovascular fitness from riding an ebike!

Which ebike do I need?

This is one of those questions where you’ll get a different answer from everyone. We’ve narrowed our range in recent years to make sure we can offer high-quality bikes that also have good support from manufacturers in case anything does go wrong. Melbourne bike culture

According to the CSIRO, 1/5th of greenhouse gas emissions in Melbourne comes from fossil fuels burnt for energy and transport. If we are serious about our Net Zero emissions target of 2050 – we will need to look at how we get around our lovely city of Melbourne. Good news for the environment is that according to the last us Melbournians actually like our bicycles! 21’000 of us take to the streets of Melbourne every week. We have an active cycling culture for commuting, recreation, fitness and sport, and the city of Melbourne accommodates us well with its extensive network of off-road bicycle paths, as well as designated bicycle lanes on many streets.

Melbourne has a fair way to go in order to match the superior bicycle-friendly cities of western europe but the federal government has had the priority of turning Melbourne into a 20-30 minute city for a few years now. Providing opportunities to keep people in the area would promote neighborhood cycling.

It seems Melbournians are still addicted to commuting by car though, over 1.3m are relying solely on a car to get to work. Electric cars are coming thick and fast – and thats great for the environment – but it seems most are still wary of the lack of infrastructure, leaving someone stranded in the middle of an intersection without power – as well as this, cars in general, whether electric, hybrid or autonomous carry on average 1.1 people in Melbourne. Comparatively, the precious urban space that is taken up transporting commuters around the city is significantly higher than the space needed for the same number of cyclists.
