This is a recent electric bicycle conversion on one of our Shorthaul Cargo Bikes for a customer in Sydney. 36V LiFE PO4 battery pack and controller mounted under the seat inside the cargo box. This keeps the weight nice and low and the cabling nice and tidy. The battery pack has a locking carrier so the pack is secure but can be removed for charging off the bike if required. An LCD screen mounted on the handlebars allows the rider to choose how much assist they need.
This year we entered two Longhaul cargo bikes into the Melburn Roobaix. We totalled 55km during the day much of it over cobbled backstreets and lanes. The only casualties were a couple of baguettes and at least one onion. The bikes performed faultlessly and we even overtook a few people uphill in the back lanes of obscure bits of Melbourne. If you've never heard of the Roobaix, read about it here.
The bikes were standard spec apart from some lighter genuine vintage cargo boxes and straight handlebars so we could stand up instead of the normal more leisurely riding position.
Looking forward to 2012!
We are now open: Mon-Fri 9am to 6pm | Saturday 10am to 3.00pm
We love how a simple machine that has really not changed very much since it was invented can make your everyday life so much better. Better because it keeps you fit, better, because you can use your car less. Better, because you can ride past traffic snarl ups and park your bicycle right outside the place you need to go to. Even if that is in the middle of a great big busy city. Electric bicycles work really well in spread out cities like Melbourne and Sydney allowing you to cover greater distances and arrive at your destination without being hot and sweaty.
At Cargocycles we have a growing range of bikes to make your everyday transport needs a whole lot easier. We sell front loading bakfiets style cargo bikes and the Yuba Mundo and Boda Boda cargo bikes and accessory range. We can also build and modify electric bicycles at our Collingwood store.
If you are a cyclist who rides a bike for transport rather than recreation then there is a good chance that you've found it hard to carry enough stuff on your standard bicycle.
Whether that is more than one child in a seat or a laptop and a bunch of heavy textbooks there comes a time when even the best quality panniers can't carry enough. One of the most difficult challenges with a standard bicycle isn't necessarily its inability to cope with the weight it is often a problem with being able to load it safely. How many times have you been filling the panniers only to have your bike crash to the ground because it overbalances on its side stand while you reach down for the next load?
Loading kids into rear carriers is particularly dangerous in this scenario. This is where a dedicated cargo carrying bike like the Yuba Mundo or the front loading Zeitbikes (cargo bikes) come into their own. Wide stands make the bike stable when loading and dedicated load carrying systems and accessories keep everything safe. With the box bikes particularly, kids - even large ones- can safely climb into the box without you helping and the bike will not tip over.
PS: Check out our great range of electric bikes.
We recently prepared this bike project for a customer in Perth. We purchased the Mk1 cargocycle from a previous customer as part of our buyback scheme and then refurbished it as required before fitting a 24v Sealed Lead Acid battery electric conversion kit. The batteries and controller all fit in a canvas bag in the bottom of the cargo box so the weight is carried nice and low. If the electric assist is not needed for a trip it is a quick job to remove the power unit and store it off the bike.
